On November 5th, 2022 The Fifth International Workshop on Microwave and Microsystems was successfully held in Tianjin University. The workshop is sponsored by Tianjin University, co-organized by Fuzhou University and organized by both School of Microelectronics and Tianjin Key Laboratory of Imaging and Sensing Microelectronics Technology. The workshop is held as a virtual conference online on Zoom platform.

As an important part of the construction of the talent recruitment base of the school, this workshop is held in the fifth consecutive year as an annual activity for international exchange in the field of integrated circuits (ICs) and microsystems. The workshop had invited eight experts including Fellows of the IEEE for keynote talks online to share the latest development in their research, and discuss with the faculties from the school. The invited speakers include Ke Wu who is the professor of the Polytechnique Montréal, Canada, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Raafat Mansour who is the professor of the University of Waterloo, Canada, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada; Yeo Kiat Seng who is the professor of Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Sciences; Qijun Zhang who is the professor of Carleton University, Canada, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada; Kaixue Ma who is the awardee of the Chinese National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Fellow of the Chinese Institute of Electronics and the Dean of the School of Microelectronics, Tianjin University; Zhizhang Chen who is the professor of Fuzhou University / Dalhousie University, Canada, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada; Erping Li who is the Dean of Zhejiang University-University of Illinois Joint College, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the American Academy of Electromagnetism; And Ming Yu who is the professor of Southern University of Science and Technology, China, the adjunct professor from the University of Waterloo, Fellow of the IEEE, and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

The online workshop had attracted over 300 registrations including the teachers and students from the Tianjin University and other universities, as well as the experts from industry. The opening ceremony of the workshop was held at 8:10 on the morning of November 5nd and hosted by professor Qijun Zhang. The university Vice President professor Wenping Hu delivered the opening address via the recorded video. He welcomed the attending of the invited speakers and indicted that the School of Microelectronics has continued to strengthen the construction of “Heterogeneous Chip Microsystem +” platform based on the advantageous foundation of Tianjin IC Design Center, and focused on the technological direction of IC development in the post-Moore era, planned the scheme to develop various integrated microsystem technology. Tianjin University will continue to promote the international exchange and cooperation in the aspects of research innovation, industrial service and talent cultivation with an open attitude.

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Zhang and Prof. Ma chaired the morning and afternoon talk sessions. The talk delivered from the speakers are with the titles of “Substrate Integrated Waveguide: A Journey from Non-Planar Structures to Planar High-Density Integration for Mhz through Thz Circuits, Antennas and Systems”, “Challenges of Artificial Intelligence Chip Design in terms of Electromagnetic Integrity”, “Phase Change Materials (PCM) Switches and their Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Applications”,“High-Performance Metamaterials and Applications”, “EM Topology Optimization of Microwave Circuits”, “RF/Millimeter-Wave Coupled Line Design for Frequency Conversion Circuits and Applications”, “A 28/37GHz Dual Band Reconfigurable IQ Transceiver with Bandpass Filtering Response using 55nm CMOS for 5G mm-wave Applications”, “Novel Structures and Technologies for Microwave Sensors”, “New Development of Microwave Network Theory and Applications”, respectively. The interaction was also conducted online after the talks.

The workshop has been organized successfully in the form of the virtual conference via the online platform, to continue delivering the international exchange stadium for students, teachers and scholars in the field of ICs and microsystems within the university and the outside. At the same time, this success has provided a new perspective for the school to initiate international cooperation from multiple aspects to strengthen the construction of the talent recruitment base.
